Custom IP68 2D Force Sensor Developed for Underwater Testing Applications
A long-term customer, who had previously purchased a standard 2D Force Sensor from LCS Tech for laboratory-based force feedback in actuators, recently returned with a new set of requirements. The initial sensor was designed for conventional laboratory use, where waterproofing was not necessary. However, as the customer’s project evolved, they needed to expand their testing to include underwater measurements at a depth of five meters. To ensure continuity and cost-effectiveness, the customer also wanted to retain their existing test fixture without any modifications.
Meeting these dual requirements—IP68 waterproof protection and identical mounting dimensions—posed a significant design challenge. Nevertheless, LCS Tech’s engineering team developed a customized IP68 2D force sensor that not only met the waterproofing standard but also perfectly matched the size and mounting configuration of the previous sensor. This allowed the customer to integrate the new sensor seamlessly into their existing setup, avoiding the need for costly redesigns or additional tooling.
To guarantee performance under pressure, each sensor undergoes a rigorous 0.2 MPa pressure test during production. This simulates conditions equivalent to approximately 20 meters of water depth, ensuring airtight sealing and reliable operation at the required 5-meter depth. In addition, every unit is subjected to in-house linearity testing, with careful evaluation of key performance parameters including nonlinearity, hysteresis, and repeatability errors. These quality control measures ensure that the custom-built IP68 sensor delivers precise and dependable measurements in underwater environments.
This latest development builds on LCS Tech's extensive experience in producing waterproof Load Cells and force sensors. Over the years, the company has successfully customized sensors for a wide range of applications, from standard waterproof solutions to specialized sensors capable of withstanding pressures at depths of up to 4,000 meters. Such expertise positions LCS Tech as a trusted partner for customers operating in industries such as marine research, underwater robotics, offshore engineering, and defense technology.
The company emphasizes that the design of waterproof load cells requires careful consideration of sealing techniques. Typically, high-viscosity adhesives or precision welding are used to ensure watertight performance. However, these methods can influence the mechanical deformation of the sensor body, making waterproof designs more complex than conventional models. As a result, custom waterproof load cells are generally recommended for medium- to large-scale applications where sealing interference is minimized.
By delivering this tailored IP68 2D force sensor, LCS Tech once again demonstrates its ability to adapt to evolving customer needs while maintaining the highest standards of engineering excellence. The project not only provided the customer with a cost-effective solution for underwater force measurement but also underscored the company’s commitment to innovation in sensor technology.
